What an outstanding Rotary meeting.  There were several special events that took place.

We were honored to have Immediate Past District Governor, John Tabor attend. He was there to recognize our club for our sustaining membership and our per capita giving level to the Rotary Foundation.  Of the 46,000 Rotary clubs around the world, we rank in the top 6% in giving.  Attached is a photo of PDG Tabor awarding us with new banners.  Pictured here are me, PDG John Tabor and Rotary Foundation Chair John Curtin.

We had a magnificent presentation on the Cleft Palate Foundation by Ms. Ruth Bowling and Dr. Paul Wharton.  The terrific work being done around the globe for those kids born with cleft palates is amazing.  This work takes a child born with a deformity that will be ostracize in society as being too different and turns them into productive young men and women with a full productive life.  Dr. Wharton was present as an example of what can be done.  Born with this deformity, he received the necessary surgery, and he then pursue his education all the way to a PhD in Phycology.  What a transformation medicine has done for these children.  It was pointed out that $500 would pay for the transportation, room and board and the surgery for a child with this disorder.  Our club will be sending the $500 to provide these services for a child. If any of you feel compelled to do an additional child. Just make you check out to San Jose Rotary, and we will forward your contribution in your name to the Cleft Palate Foundation.

Finally,  John Curtin in his ABCs of Rotary introduced us to ADRAG, Alzheimer/Dementia Rotary Action Group. He pointed out that there are 6,000,000 people diagnosed in the US annually and over 50,000,000 globally with this disease. It was asked, "How we/you can help?".  The answer is you can join ADRAG for $25. You can become a club champion for this cause or even become District Ambassador for this cause.

Having lived through and affected by this disease with my wife, Janet, I immediately said I would join AGRAG and volunteered to be our club's champion for this cause.  If your family has not been affected with this disease, chances are very high for someone that you know, and love will be faced with this battle.  You too can join for $25 and I can assure you that I will be a Champion that will keep you informed of this groups' efforts and that I will begin educating us on the effects of this disease.

What a great meeting and if you missed it, I am sorry but there are more great meeting coming.

Guest Speaker - Captain Ed Turner, Retired U.S. Navy

If you missed our meeting last night, you missed a terrific one.  Our speaker was Captain Ed Turner, Retired U.S. Navy.  Ed is leading a group in designing , developing and building a POW/MIA National Museum to be located on Cecil Field. We committed to purchasing and placing a San Jose Rotary Brick on their walk of honor. Captain Turner invited all of us to come and tour the facility they have now and to review their vision of the completed museum estimated to have a price tag of 80 million dollars.  The United States is one of a handful of countries that has an ongoing effort to not leave anyone behind.  This is a potential Jacksonville jewel.

Guest Speaker - Mark Lamping, President of the Jacksonville Jaguars

The San Jose Rotary club were honored to have Mark Lamping, President of the Jacksonville Jaguars as our guest speaker. This makes Mark’s 10th year to speak to our club.

Mark spent the evening discussing the negotiations with the city on the new stadium and the Jaguars 30 year contract to remain in Jacksonville.

He answered questions from the floor and it was a pleasure to have him address our group once again.

Florida/Georgia tailgate party being held at Chophouse 13 beginning at 6pm.

Last night we had a fun time at the San Jose Rotary's Georgia vs. Florida tailgate party.  Many thanks to Theresa Green Hazel for planning and executing a wonderful club social.

We were honored to have District 6970's District Governor Elect (DGE), Dale Moe and his wife Rejennie join us. We also had our old friend and server from San Jose Country Club, Donald Lang join us.  Also, we had the privilege of welcoming back from North Carolina, Joe and Janet Perry and past member Roy Miller and his friend Debbie.  Finally, we had 20 attendees that enjoyed a great tailgate buffet, and had a chance to play in a GA vs FL football pool with a potential $50 paid for each quarter (1, 2 & 3) and the final score winner receiving $170.  Good luck to you all.  The attendees also played a Trivia game where the winners won wonderful gifts like Gator or Bulldog napkins packs (ha).

Next week, November 5 we have as our speaker the Jaguar President, Mr. Mark Lamping.  I know you will not want to miss his comments about "DUVAL".

Finally, mark your calendars for our San Jose Rotary Christmas party being hosted by Mike and Jeanne Farmand on December 3, 2024.  I have talked with Santa about selecting a Christmas gift for our members.  Have you been naughty or nice?

Guest Speaker - Dr. Paul Wharton

Dr. Paul Wharton addressed the club on the international need to support the Cleft Palate Foundation.  Low attendance due to upcoming Hurricane Milton. So we will reschedule him for after the first of the year.

Gene Frenette, Guest Speaker

If you missed last Tuesday's Rotary meeting, you missed a good one. We had a lot of Happy Rotarians for Happy Times. I invited 3 guests to our meeting hoping to enlighten them on Rotary and encourage them to consider joining. Captain John gave us an update on the football pool where there was a winner (a friend of Theresa) that took home $530! John also presented our weekly ABCs of Rotary question worth $30. Mike Blakley answered it correctly.  He gracefully turned the winning back into the pot, making this week's question worth $35. We were entertained by our speaker, Gene Frenette, Sports Columnists for the Florida Times Union. He did not have a lot of positive word for the teams we support here in NE Florida (Gators, Seminoles & Jaguars).

The meeting was filled with real Rotarian fellowship.  If you did not make this one, try and join us this upcoming week.  We have an excellent speaker who is helping run a foundation servicing children around the world born with Cleft Palates.  I believe you will find her talk interesting.  Also put October 29th on you follow up as we will have a Ga/Fl tailgate party in leu of a meeting.  Ware your favorite college colors.  It does not have to be FL/GA colors.

Nathan Stanley, Guest Speaker

Our guest speaker was Nathan Stanley, Executive Director of Seamark Ranch in St Johns County. This children's ranch provides a family atmosphere home, schooling, vocational training on the farm and a Christian upbring for youngsters separated or removed from their dysfunctional traditional family. Nathan provided our club with an update on the additions to the ranch, their vision for the future and shared with us how our donated funds are used to help with their cause.

San Jose Rotary has been an ongoing partner and supporter with Seamark for the past 5 years. The photo shows Rotary club President, Ron Shamlaty presenting Mr. Stanley a certificate that indicates we are inoculating 20 children somewhere around the world with the Polio vaccine in his honor.
